A bunion is bad word in many households due to the pain, embarrassment, and frustration they cause.
A bunion is a deformity of the big toe where the 1st metatarsal phalangeal joint is misaligned, and the muscles around the big toe are imbalanced. Bunions aren’t something that happens overnight. They start slowly and progress over time.
HOW TO BUNIONS FORM?
Bunions form when the toe moves out of it’s natural place, causing pressure and friction as they rub against the shoe. It gets worse as the movement of the big toe angles inward toward the other toes, and sometimes will overlap them, rotate, and twist. As it the enlargement grows, it creates more inflammation and irritation. Left untreated, bunions can lead to other toe problems, like hammertoe.
WHAT DOES A BUNION FEEL LIKE?
People with bunions describe them as causing pain and discomfort from the constant friction and pressure of the bunion against shoes. The skin on the affected toe becomes inflamed, red, and very sensitive. As this joint flexes with each step, it causes increasing pain when walking.
WHAT CAUSES BUNIONS?
Wearing shoes that are too small or tight is the primary cause of bunions. People with foot issues like flat feet and pronated feet experience bunions more often. Women who wear high heels on a regular basis, especially if they are poor quality, tight, or have a narrow toe space (like most high heels) tend to develop bunions more often than those who do not.
HOW TO TREAT BUNIONS
Bunions do not go away by themselves, but fortunately, are treatable. First, you need to stop any growth by taking the pressure off of the bunion. Then follow the following steps to alleviate the bunion and prevent them in the future:
– Add a layer of protective padding on the inside of the shoe to prevent friction
– Buy shoes that fit correctly, and avoid shoes with a narrow toe space or shoes that put pressure on your toes
– Get Custom Fitted Arch Supports to help stabilize the joints in the feet, and put the foot in the correct position when walking and standing
– Perform toe exercises and stretches to manage bunions and the pain from them.
